So..what do you think...now that you have bagged both....which HC is harder, Painted Cave or Gibraltar to La cumbre? My take is Painted Cave, which coincidentally this guy thinks trumps South Grade on the pain meter.

I think Painted Cave is definitely harder. Gibraltar is longer but more gentle climb, while Painted Cave (+Old San Marcos) have these brutal double-digit grade stretches that made my legs burn, even as I was going easy. After all strava craze, I want to reserve the right to do some climbs easy, enjoy the ride and not obsess about my standings on KOM ladder.

Fair enough, glad you had a safe and fun ride, still great times!
Nice ride I did almost the same loop 3 months ago. Really scenic ride. I can't wait to go back.

Nice ride I did almost the same loop a few months ago, it hurt. Can't wait to do it again.

Tony it seems we keep riding the same roads, just not at the same time! maybe one day it will change... really gorgeous roads.

That's a fair amount of climbing. Props to Oleg.

How about a Descenders weekend to ride those routes, looks like some great riding.

Rob, Voris has been talking about day-trip to Santa Barbara (by train?). Could also be a good opening day for Monster Climbs trip in the future.

I like to park at the mission, up Gibraltar across C Cielo, down PC and OSM, turn around at bottom and reverse back to mission. 8000+ climbing over about 40miles. All up or down, no flat. Great views and hardly any cars. Hard to beat that. Let me know if u guys come up, I could meet u. You should add Refugio and Figueroa to your list. Great climbs. There is a TT on Gibraltar dart January, if you are interested

Shawn, you described one of my favorite rides to do lately, but in reverse. I go up OSM and PC, across CC, down Gibraltar, and reverse back up and across. It's crazy fun.
