For GPS devices that do not have a barometric altimeter (which provides Strava with accurate elevation data), Strava looks up elevation data from an elevation database provided by the USGS.

p90x leg and back workout the night before doing this ride = VERY BAD IDEA. I wanted to die through 90% of this ride. Ugh. Ugh. Just happy I didn't give up and get picked up in Santa Cruz!
