07/08/2017 - M&DCC "Torture 40". Except my Garmin blew me out for the last 5 miles or so, so it wasn't the complete route...

Chapeau. Just doing the Torture 40 alone is tough. To then add everything else around it - wow!

"Torture 40" was done today at a VERY sedate pace, Nick. I'd hit a PR on almost every segment on the way there, and was averaging 18.5 mph after the first hour. The plan was to go to Velo Life, eat, drink, come home. Then it turned out to be closed on Mondays so I foolishly decided to head over the Thames and give the "40" a crack. I'd put the route into my Garmin ready for a go at it a few weeks ago, but that ride never materialised. I stopped quite a few times on the "40" for photos - deer, windmills, classic cars, etc. Check out my moving versus total times on a lot of the climbs. (It also means it'll be easier to PR the whole lot if I ride it again... ;¬{D ). I had to have something in reserve to get home, as all I had was two bottles and half-a-dozen cereal bars. There's a distinct shortage of shops in those small Chilterns villages! The weather was bloomin' miserable, but I'm happy to have done it. Fingers crossed I get better weather though, if I decide to have another go at the "Torture 40"...

Dominic - this was my first attempt to visit Velo Life. I hadn't ridden out that way since it opened there. I never even considered the possibility that it'd be closed every Monday. after finding this out, I probably should have detoured into Henley to get a bite to eat before embarking on the Torture 40. Or maybe I ought to have stopped at one of the pubs on route that were serving food? Either way it was a silly ride to do on 2 litres of squash and a handful of breakfast bars... /:¬{I

The "Torture 40", for those not familiar with it, consists (according to Strava's route builder) of a distance of 44.6 miles, and 4,608 feet of climbing. Oh, and some beautiful countryside, including a few large estates and deer parks, and some truly amazing views across valleys and flat land from the tops of some of those hills. The most spectacular view was the one looking back west from the top of Britwell Hill. Well worth a trip out this way if it's within striking distance for you...

I've only attacked britwell hill once and it was mental over physical. Well done

Britwell was definitely a mental challenge. At first glimpse in the distance it looks like a farm road going straight up an impossibly steep hill. I genuinely thought the public road would be further along and less steep. Then as you ride that long, gradual incline toward it, all becomes clear, and it seems to grow and grow. In the end it's not quite as steep as you thought it was going to be, but it's very narrow. So much so that I had all of my fingers and toes crossed hoping to avoid meeting any traffic coming down. In the end there was a van, but the driver was a good'un and he slowed right down and made as much space as he could. I also must confess that i didn't get to the top in one hit - I stopped before the hedgerow closed in to take photos of the view. Did I mention that it's an amazing view looking back down from the top? I'm keen to have another crack at the whole route of the "Torture 40" at some point. Preferably without losing the route for the last couple of miles too... ;¬{D
