🥇 in 15:44, fastest time since Eric Clifton's incredible 15:10 course record in 1992. The weather started out perfect in the morning, but was sunny and hot in the afternoon. I had a great 50 miles of hard back and forth racing with Andrew Simpson until he had an unfortunate wrong turn at mile 65. Aaron "Butch" Slabach was right behind pushing me along the whole way. I thought I would get the course record right up until about mile 76, when the heat had started to get to me, I had lost about 5 minutes to a wrong turn of my own, and then I hit the toughest climb of the course (which I had severely underestimated in my internal finishing time math). I still finished pretty strong but after the race I was wrecked for hours. Despite being born & raised in the hot & humid East Tennessee valley, I seem to melt in the sun. 😅
