Big turnout. I'm sorry I missed it.
“Epic” is so overused. That said, this was indeed epic.
It was awesome, Vince. The gravel roads had, but for the rare exception, been regraded in the past month. With little rain, there was still a lot of loose "soup," and big chunky stones made up big swaths of many roads. On my road bike with 26mm tires, it was a handling challenge. I had to walk up the steepest of the dirt climbs because my rear tire kept spinning and sliding (perhaps that my lowest gear was a 34/25 had something to do with that, as I could over-torque the wheel on such a loose surface). I also had a pinch flat on a descent, thankfully with a controlled stop and a swift change of tube. But that's really not a big deal: I had possibly the least appropriate bike for a route with more than 40 miles of gravel roads, and I kept up a good pace. And given the resistance of the loose surfaces, it felt like I'd put in 100 miles in the saddle.
Congrats Rudi! Hip 2.0 well suited for gravel : )
