The Ruinas de Cobá are an ancient Maya city located in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Once a powerful trade and ceremonial center, Cobá is known for its vast network of white limestone roads (sacbé) that connected it to other important cities. Among its most impressive structures is Nohoch Mul, the tallest pyramid in the Yucatán Peninsula. The site also features multiple ball courts, where the Maya played the sacred game of pelota.

Pelota maya was more than just a sport—it held deep religious and symbolic meaning. Players used their hips, elbows, and knees to strike a heavy rubber ball, aiming to pass it through stone hoops on the court’s walls. The game often represented the battle between life and death, and in some cases, it was linked to ritual sacrifices. The ball courts at Cobá stand as a reminder of this ancient tradition, offering insight into the spiritual and social life of the Maya civilization.
