Applying power at the base of a mild slope, my derailleur was somehow ripped off the bike, taking part of the frame with it. The frame is toast.

I walked the 2.3km to Keihan Uji (thank goodness for cleat covers!). I made the mistake of asking whether I could bring the bike on to the train.. had to fetch someone. The answer was "no", of course... sigh, I could have just walked on and no one would have cared.  Left the bike at a paid parking spot, took the train home, then went back with the car to fetch the dead carcass.

I don't know why this failure happened, but it's plausible that the fateful moment was a bit earlier in the ride while at a rest stop I was standing with the bike leaning up against me, and in a moment of inattention it flopped over onto the drivetrain side. If the derailleur hit the ground and leverage was applied to the hanger or frame, well, who knows, that could have done it.

I have a good excuse for a new bike now.
