Every year but this year, I’d have 2-3 out of 10 days on the bike where I felt like I was riding to my potential. So many more days of feeling “blah” but just pushing through. However this year, with all this BS “BRO SCIENCE” 😜, even the days where I don’t feel like riding, I end up riding stronger than really any other “good” day in past. So why? 

Consistency : This is probably the bulk of it, the bro science fueling and lifestyle changes help, for sure, but I used to ride some epic adventure, wreck my shit, take too much time off, and spend so much time rebuilding back to fitness.

Because I’m back at the full time day job this year, it’s allowed me to ride less, but WAY more consistent. Which is the move. 40hrs one week, followed by 2 hours the next week, is not ideal for progression. I ride 90-120min M-F, 4-8hrs Sat, and ride moto with my boy Sun. (Active recovery) This has given me a steady and consistent growth of fitness that is less FRAGILE. 

Fueling: My high protein/low carb off the bike with Ultra Hugh carb on the bike, paired with perfect timing of fuel, has allowed me to predict and guarantee “god legs”. Focusing on making my body soak up carbs quick and efficiently backed with CGM data, has completely changed my cycling experience for the better. It’s a TON of work to track, cook, and be disciplined enough to stick to it, but it’s not even the same sport anymore to me. 

SLEEP/LIFESTYLE: 12-14hr fasting everyday especially before bed, sleeping outside, proper supplementation of vitamins, and managing cortisol levels with sunlight and movement IMMEDIATELY apon waking, is the most amount of work for the least amount of impact, but it still plays a role. It’s the little sprinkle of salt that pulls this all together. 

I swear EVERY RIDE I come back feeling HIGH AF, I never feel fatigued, or cracked, and I never want to be done. I always feel like I’m ending my rides short for the energy I have. A lot of this is probably the reduction of travel stress. The last 3 years I had spent more time AWAY from home, than home. That wrecked my routine and hormones. 

Tomorrow I’ll do a giant write up of what I have found to be the best bang for the buck in terms of the hippie shit I do. Also, enjoy a short clip of my boy RIPPIN! 

*** on a note about my boy and the last thing I’ll say about the other night is this, after I came back from the crash, my family was all out in the driveway watching the whole thing play out. I got back and my son said “Good job Dad.” … bro… whatever long term trauma I acquired from it, was worth this moment. I hope him seeing me bolt into the woods and take action while he saw others do nothing, will set that trait in him as an adult. My wife also told me she KNEW I’d be ok and that she didn’t worry one bit. Which made me feel like the MAN of the family and it made feel good my wife felt better that I was helping. I felt I had purpose, that I had value. 

I spoke to my son afterwards, I gave him and my daughter a very tight hug, and I told my son this: 

“We like to think we will do the right thing when the time comes. But it’s not a matter of thinking, you either do or you don’t. It comes from a different place than the mind. It comes from the gut, the body, the soul. If you start to think, there will be a 100 valid reasons to do nothing. But in the aftermath, when you look within yourself, you will either feel a great sense of pride, or devastating feeling of shame. I hope you will never have to act as an adult, but if you do, and I’m no longer around, know I would be proud of you in a way that is impossible to understand until you have kids of your own.” (Maybe with a few “Bros” & “Dudes” taken out for dramatic effect 😎
