Real multi-terrain race. Very warm and sunny today, not much wind either. Wore brand new shoes (Asic Fujispeed 3s) delivered yesterday. Also an ultra that started at 9am and a marathon that started 10/15 mins before (which wasn't great timing). In 2nd out of the field, but then into 1st on the canal. Flat towpath for 3.6 miles, rolling around 6s having to overtake a lot of the marathon runners. Over the canal and start the long climb. Bit of woods then field all the way to Tor-y-foel. A bit of a pain to overtake still. Was feeling quite pooped going up but ran all the way. A few steep ramps and false summits. Great descent the other side which was firm enough underfoot. Then onto the track for a way out of the Brecon beacons fell race. Turned off right down a very wet (running with water) rocky path which was unexpected. Proper offroad. Then hard right onto the big track. Really rolling from here as gentle downhill then flat for miles. Nasty last climb in 11 mile before sharp dog leg left. At the bottom here lost some time due to bad marking and a bit of a double back. Then a lot of fields to negotiate and gates and stiles before coming back on the canal and start field to finish. Great first 11 miles then felt the last section was a faff and slow (7.43 downhill) hoping to see yellow markers. Shoes felt great on the harder surfaces as expected and gentle downhills. Pretty good on that wet rocky path too. Not the best for the muddy grass climb but ok enough. A lot of people went wrong at mile 11 and carried straight on the main track to the canal. With better marking would have gone under 1.30. Finished 1st. Course record by over 12 mins.
