Sleep deprivation, calf injury and poor fitness leads to no miler for me. 

Entering in this ultra had been a last minute affair. I had been targeting the GPT100 miler before sustaining a calf strain less than two weeks out, leading me to withdraw. The 6 weeks leading up to this event I had been able to only do slow 5k runs. Really had to nurse my injury. On top of that I crashed my bike and injured my AC joint to my R) shoulder.

Due to not being able to take more time off work, we had to fly down early the day before this miler. 2hrs sleep the night before a 2am start was never going to be a good idea. The sleep deprivation really hit me hard at the 30k mark. I’ve never felt so pathetically weak in a race. 
My greatest concern coming into the event was my calf strain and sure enough at 16k into the race, I felt my calf strain go again. I was still able to run with pain and an altered gait. My leg felt suboptimal from there on. Placing from 5th back to 12th through the first two checkpoints, I really started to go backwards up the climb to Perisher. As a result of me compensating for my calf my L) hamstring and both hip flexors really took the brunt of the load. At the 40k mark the 100k runners joined the trails and I found myself being passed by hundreds of people whom were all between 3-15k point of their race respectively. At this point I felt my race was over, taking a psychological blow to my ego. I just hated the feeling of feel exhaustion so early on in such a profoundly long endeavour. 

So, after running on 4hrs sleep over those 2 days and bind of useless legs, I decided to pull the pin after reaching the 57k mark. This had been amplified by the realisation that how slow I was travelling would force Indi and I miss our next rostered shift back in Brisbane. After all, we still had to drive home to Brisbane. 

Thanks to Indi for supporting me at the event!  Indi had also had no sleep leading up to the start of this event and in truth we both felt like zombies just at the starting line of the miler. Big effort from Indi the night before the event when my phone decided to stop working (a mandatory piece of gear). Indi drove from Jindabyne to Canberra 1hr45 to buy me a new phone just 5hrs before the event. Monster effort to save the day! 

All and all, one of the shittest performances of my life (even worse than the Guzzler). Really feel as though I’ve got a lot to prove with ultra sports. At least this time my nutrition and hydration was spot on (small win). I’ll be back much harder next time, no chance I’m leaving this event incomplete…
