Gorgeous ride with John around the Quabbin Reservoir, which provides drinking water for 40% of the state’s population. The reservoir required residents of 4 towns to evacuate. These towns—Greenwich, Enfield, Prescott, and Dana—ceased to exist in 1938. Residents evacuated, the buildings were razed, the cemeteries dug up, until all that remained were the cellars that once stored the people’s dry goods. When the dam was built in 1940, the waters slowly rose over the streets that once connected these 4 towns. Now, all that remains of them are islands in the middle of the reservoir, once the hills of Greenwich, Enfield, Prescott, and Dana.
