I grew up riding BMX bikes around the neighborhood, making simple jumps with plywood and stacks of 2x4s. Then freeride happened and about 2002 I got back into bikes with an Iron Horse SGS DH Pro ($1,200 at Supergo near UW!) Bikes are freedom! My profile picture was taken on my "small" bike that replaced my Iron Horse when I moved to Hawaii. This was a Kona Stinky, 1x9 tranny, 2010, riding in the "6hrs of Heck in Paradise" endurance race. I wasn't putting down record times, but I rode the whole thing and had a blast, and so began my metamorphosis from DH into all-mountain/xc/roadcommute/enduro. >>>photo credit to Collin Cross (Oahu bike mechanic, photographer, biker)
