Hey Strava I'm super stoked to be one of the athletes chosen to play around with the new posting functions here!
For those new to me, I'm a 50-yr old vegan ultra endurance athlete currently training for Ötillö swimrun world championships in Sweden in September. I haven't raced since 2011 so getting back into serious training has been interesting to say the least. I also wrote a couple books, host a podcast, blah blah, whatevs.
As a vegan athlete I get a lot of nutrition questions. Let's leave the protein question aside for now. Next in popularity is something like "what do you eat before training? What do you eat after?"
Personally I find these questions super boring. Right up there with watts talk. And no matter how many times I answer it, I get it again. But that's what everyone wants to talk about, so let's get into it a bit.
My go to thing in the morning to get me going is a solid super nutrient dense smoothie.
I'm a huge fan of making smoothies. I love my Vitamix for this. You don't need a Vitamix, but the more high powered the blender the better. Your crappy Kitchen Aid thing ain't gonna cut it. From there my recipes vary wildly, but generally pivot on a theme - tons of organic veggies and fruits, always starting with dark leafy greens. Here's what I made today before my run (which actually didn't go that well so what do I know anyway, right?)
3 leaves dinosaur kale
1 beet + beet greens
3 tablespoons hemp seeds
1 tablespoon chlorella
1 scoop organic plant based protein (I like 22 Days brand because it's great and Marco is my friend)
1/2 cup blackberries
1 scoop acai powder
Ice + water to desired consistency
