Rest like you mean it. I mean really mean it. As athletes, we love to push ourselves. In some sense, this is the easy part. We love to competitively share our sessions here on Strava. But what if we translated that competitiveness into how we rest? What if we put the same intention into recovery that we place on our workouts? What if Strava had a function to upload how well we actually allowed our bodies to bounce back from all the exercise-induced stress?
Gains are made in the period in between workouts. And most don’t take this aspect of fitness seriously — it’s all about going hard or going home. But every accomplished athlete will tell you this is not the path to long-term (injury free) success. You can’t go hard unless you also go to bed. Go easy. And listen to your body.
At my age (50), focus on rest and recovery is more important than ever. Sleep? non-negotiable. 8 hours minimum. Nutrient dense foods high in anti-inflammatory anti-oxidants. Foam rolling, chiro, massage, you name it. I’m on it.
Today is my rest day. And I'm taking advantage of it.
I’m always looking for new and better ways to expedite and improve my recovery. I’d love to hear from all of you below on how you do it. Leave a comment and let me know your favorite go-to recovery methods.
