Before I got into cycling, I sustained severe trauma to my left knee. Patellar dislocation, ruptured quad, torn ACL, fractured femur, fractured hip, torn patellar tendon, and others I can't think of. Cycling has really helped me recover, though still my left leg is not the same as it used to be. My right leg does significant more work than my left when biking.
