The Night of MIles is an annual event organised by Wellington Scottish Running Club. It is a unique event full of Christmas fun and features races over the rarely run distance of one mile.
Each year we collect donations ($5 suggested) from athletes and spectators then hand them on to a local Wellington charity. This year we will be collecting for the Mary Potter Hospice, which provides an amazing service to the Wellington community.
The programme consists of a mix of children's, senior elite and fun social events. There are several different mile races including elite men's and women's races and an all-comers mile that anyone can participate in (including Father Christmas). The mile is the ideal distance for people who think they might be interested in running to train towards because it is a mixture of speed and endurance. Anyone can do it but it is still a challenge and an accomplishment. And it is such a historically important distance in NZ's athletic history.
In previous years, the Night of Miles has been at Newtown Park. But, because Newtown Park is being redeveloped this summer, we have got permission to host our event at the Basin Reserve instead. Which should be really exciting for the crowds.
