The actual Stoneman (Road version) in the Dolomites. Wasn't too crowded (good that we didn't attempt this on the Dolomiti bike day tomorrow 😳), but the weather was quite a challenge. The hardest part was the climb to Drei Zinnen (Tre Cime) with 12% average over 700hm, and a significant part 16-20%. 💪

The actual test ride, Timmelsjoch, Jaufenpass and Brenner in a row, while carrying the full equipment in the saddle bag. I had company up to Zwieselstein, where we departed.

It worked better than expected. Even though I almost didn't sleep in the Bivy on the campground, Timmelsjoch was surprisingly doable, and Jaufenpass was also okay (and I finally got to see the actual area around it, not completely covered in clouds like last year). Brenner OTOH was hard, from Sterzing on there was really annoying headwind, which lasted until I got to Jenbach (I was already looking forward to the climb from Wiesing, hoping that it wouldn't also be headwind on the way up, and indeed from Jenbach on it was enjoyable again).

Conclusion: everything in the saddle bag is workable, but I think I need to distribute the weight a bit better. I'll also check if I really need the Bivy, it's quite heavy and occupies a lot of space. Timmelsjoch and Jaufenpass in a row (with the climb to Stuls in between), which I wasn't sure about with bikepacking equipment, is also workable. So, ready to go (mostly).

Went to Klausenpass with Juan Leaniz today, who was climbing like a pro on his Aeroad, and I really had to push to keep up. 💪

For the Google Bike to Work Month, we decided to go from Brenner all the way to the Munich office, starting Monday morning at 7:30am from the Italian border. On Sunday I took a detour to get there, and picked up Henning Becker for the last 50km, climbing up to Brenner, where we were almost exactly on time (6:45am).

Germany&#39;s highest paved pass, Riedbergpass, and a few other climbs in the pre-alps. While it&#39;s not as well known as the climbs in Italy for example, the area still offers a lot. ⛰️

My first 600km ride for 2025! 💪

The original plan was to go to South Tyrol, but I changed plans and chose the safe option, due to the high chance for thunderstorms and snow.

I already planned a backup trip around Lake Constance last year, so I could just put plan B into action now. h/t Simon Zünd who suggested to add Riedbergpass, which - shame on me - I had missed from my plan.

So on Tuesday I started south, going via Ettalsattel to Plansee, then Gaichtpass (I briefly fantasized of adding a quick visit to Hahntennjoch, which just opened 5 days ago... Spoiler: it was good that I didn't), then Oberjoch, and afterwards Riedbergpass (the highest mountain pass in Germany, which only comes with 680hm, but has 9% average gradient and a lot of 16% parts... The traffic was also very manageable), and finally Pfänder. For Pfänder I made a planning mistake as I hadn't realized that the climb from Langen is 10km on terrible gravel with large trucks also using them. 😭 So I ended up being in Bregenz later than planned, and mostly went to buy stuff for the night, and then cross the border to Switzerland at Rheineck. I found a nice pizza place in Rohrschach, which also had excellent Espresso! I stayed there until like 10pm, and started the trip to the other side of the lake.

I arrived in Stein am Rhein around 1am. Cycling in Switzerland was great, not only because it was during the night.

So Wednesday basically started with the climb to Radolfzell, which isn't a pleasant one, and in particular not in the middle of the night. The roads and (pop-up) cycle paths in Germany also don't match the Swiss standard. Once I got past Überlingen I turned in the direction of Allgäu, which I knew will be challenging because of the 50 tiny hills in my way. 

Unfortunately I had a pretty strong headwind (from ENE) for the last 250kms, which ensured that I'm really, really tired now 🥱
