What a race! 3rd overall and 1st in my age group for the 10th fastest runner in the continent this year <30 (per UltraRunningMag)! I learned a lot during this race and had to make many adjustments, but it couldn’t have been executed any better! Goal was sub 17; plan was to go out at an aggressive pace to give myself some time at aid stations, but also to try and be efficient with a more natural stride.

mile 1-32: started in last place because the line to the porta potties was so long that I was still pooping when the race started.. It didn’t take long for it to get hot. I was chugging tailwind and threw up a whole bunch when I met my crew at mi32. Got to share some miles with Nicholas Steel as well😎

mile 33-62: Heat index was hovering around 90 for this entire stretch.. changed up the fueling a little bit. Stopped eating so many gummies and more real food, and diluted the tailwind. After throwing up, my legs, stomach and mental were all feeling stronger than ever. Crew developed a little system during my stops to make it just a little more efficient. Slipped in 3rd place at the turnaround and never looked back!

mile 63-79: I’ve surpassed my longest run ever at this point and fatigue settled in. It was still low-mid 80’s in this part of the race. Got too greedy with the pace the previous 20 miles and my hamstring began to start cramping pretty bad. Shook it off, slowed down the pace, I was taking down food and water super well, full of energy but the legs were starting to feel it!

mile 80-100: Switched out socks and brought a dead headlamp as it finally began to cool down and the sun went down, but legs were on another level of tired. Did everything I could to make it from station to station and every stop felt like heaven. Couldn’t sit down for too long before my legs became super tight though, but I was still full of energy and gave a 50K runner a run for his money at the end lol

I was supported by my friends and family and they did more than I could’ve asked for! Although I did spend nearly 100 minutes fueling and stretching at aid stations, I’m very proud to say I went the whole race without walking! Super happy with the way this turned out. Onto the next one👀

Was nervous about the weather so I repacked my running vest and drop bags over and over again reconsidering what to have available at the Base Camp drop. Lucky for me I kept my rain clothes and an extra pair of shoes in the drop bag. 

No headlamp this year, it was a bad move for the return. With stopping to change for weather and some terrible conditions, I didn’t beat the sunset so it was pretty much black out for the last 3 miles. That was scketchy with the sticky wet mud going down to the finish. 

Overall was a good experience, lots of new growth to focus on in my weak spots. I’m excited to dial in and go for it next year.
