Mt Donna Buang is perhaps the most accessible true mountain climb since it is 16km long and within riding distance of Melbourne. Stop at the Warburton bakery after the climb and ride back to the city, a solid day of training popular with those training for the Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic in October.
This is a famous family snow field with its base located in Marysville, which is about 1.5 hour drive north-east of Melbourne CBD. This 1,300m high mountain is one of the Victorian summits that is easily accessible for weekend training rides and has 2 faces. The bottom half is steep with a gradient averaging about 8% (up to 11%). Then it eases off dramatically after 9km and there is even a section of downhill before turning left for the final 9.8km of 4% average gradient. The summit view is breathtaking and the chalet staff is friendly. It’s worth taking time to enjoy Marysville and the surrounds as the oak trees are spectacular.
Lake Mountain is one of the closest alpine climbs to Melbourne and one that all hill-loving cyclists should try. It's 21km from Marysville to the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort and the hardest part is the opening section of 4.5km which averages close to 10%. From there it's a gentle and enjoyable climb through the trees to the summit.
