A favorite route for marathon training, the Scenic Loop gets its name not just because it is scenic but also because it travels down Scenic Drive. Those who are training for the Austin Marathon know they will be faced with plenty of hills so this hilly loop is the perfect place to train. The route starts from the Rock at the Lady Bird Lake trail, so you could easily add on mileage along the lake if you like. Some of the most popular hills in town are featured in this loop, the biggest being Mt. Bonnell. The hill on Mt. Bonnell Road is called "Mount" for a reason, climbing over 200 feet in a half-mile. After you recover on the descent, be prepared for some challenging rollers on Exposition Blvd., which is part of the marathon course. Run with caution on this route, as some of the roads do not have sidewalks. It's best not to run here during high traffic times.
