Wonderland Lake & Hogback

Tucked away in North Boulder, Wonderland Lake offers an excellent starting point to a variety of different types of runs. The path that wraps around the lake is partially paved, part smooth gravel surface, and very popular with residents who come here to run, bike, walk their dogs, and play with their children. On the west side of the lake you will connect with the Foothills Trail which is a wide dirt trail that also sees a lot of foot and bike traffic but affords amazing Front Range vistas. To break away from the crowds of Wonderland and Foothills, take a side trip up the hilly Old Kiln loop. Keep your eyes peeled for prairie dogs scampering about. Now that you’ve cut your teeth on this hill, you’ll want to cross Lee Hill Drive and tackle the Hogback loop, which boasts over 800 feet of elevation gain. We prefer to run this loop clockwise to conquer the steeper side first. Log stairs will punctuate this strenuous climb. At the top you will have panoramic views of the reservoir, Mt. Sanitas, and the Flatirons. From here you can either return to the start at Wonderland Lake or you could add on more mileage by continuing east on the Foothills Trail and connecting to the trails at Boulder Valley Ranch.
