Outdoor enthusiasts abound in Boulder, but while the crowds flock to the front side of the Flatirons, the savvy trail runner knows to head just a bit further west. Only eight miles up Flagstaff Road from Boulder lies the pristine wilderness area at Walker Ranch. The loop at Walker Ranch is just over 7 miles long and can be accessed from a few different trailheads. Our route starts from the Walker Ranch Loop Trailhead and runs counterclockwise, in the same direction as the trail mile markers. Although Walker is very popular with mountain bikers, we prefer to tackle it on foot. Why carry a heavy bike up and down the steep stairs when you can nimbly dance through them in your zero-drop trail shoes? The trail dives in and out of the South Boulder Creek Canyon twice via rugged switchbacks and the aforementioned log and stone steps. You’ll only amass 1,600 feet of climbing but it will feel like you are constantly going up and down on this loop. At the bottom you’ll hear the roaring creek before you reach the raging rapids below. At the top you will enjoy views of Indian Peaks, Gross Dam, and Eldorado Canyon.
