Stroll south from Baker Street tube station towards Oxford Street and first pass the London institution that is Everyman cinema, with its retro exterior, nostalgia-tinged auditorium and clever curation of arthouse films. Pick up a bite from Reubens, which has been serving succulent salt beef sandwiches since 1973, before swinging left onto Dorset Street and then right onto Chiltern Street, where you’ll find establishments such as Sunspel, Trunk Clothiers and Cire Trudon, the oldest candle maker in the world. In need of a caffeine jolt? Stop at Souli on George Street, which serves wood-roasted Sant’Eustachio coffee from Rome, before continuing to the Wallace Collection on Manchester Square, one of the best collections of fine art in the country, where you’ll see work by Titian, Rembrandt and Canaletto alongside armoury, antique furnishings and exquisite porcelain plates. The square was formerly the site of EMI’s headquarters, where, at number 20, the cover image for the first LP by The Beatles was shot in 1963. After coffee and culture, finish the walk with some shopping. Amble onwards down Duke Street, where you can admire Dieter Rams chairs and Ettore Sottsass shelves in the furniture emporium Vitsœ, before ending your walk outside the legendary window displays of Selfridges, London’s best loved department store.
