Beginning your journey on the green fringes of Hyde Park, at the 19th-century London landmark of Marble Arch, wander north to New Quebec Street, where the ground floors of town houses are turned over to eateries and boutiques. The local pubs, is a great place to stop for an impromptu lunch, or you can head on to the more formal Restaurants, which you’ll find at the western edge of Portman Square. Crossing the northern side of the square you’ll pass in front of Home House, built in the 18th century for the Countess of Home and now a private members’ club. Continue up Baker Street, stop and admire its array individual boutiques, before reaching Blandford Street. Then take a left onto Chiltern Street and indulge in the atmosphere that is Chiltern Firehouse hotel, set in a former fire station. Chiltern Street is also home to a handful of decades-old, independently owned shops. At the north end of village-like Chiltern Street you’ll emerge onto the busy Marylebone Road, but keep walking – manicured Regent’s Park is just steps away. Swing left over to Baker Street, or take a right, passing Madame Tussauds, then go left up York Gate. Both routes will lead to Outer Circle, the tree-lined ring road around the park, inside which you’ll find 166 hectares of grass and gardens, originally appropriated as a hunting ground by King Henry VIII. Put paddle to water on the boating lake, or rise to the challenge of finding the St. John’s Lodge secret garden – a peaceful, meditative park within a park.
