This is the original first-day route (modified in 1981) in the Pan-Mass Challenge and is the longest and most difficult leg of the event. The original 1980 route was 220 miles starting in Springfield. In 1981, the PMC moved permanently to Sturbridge.
The first 50 miles are hilly; riders face long climbs as well as very fast descents. The last 60 miles are a combination of rolling hills and flats that if not for the first 50 miles, could be considered fairly easy.
This route merges with the Wellesley Babson College to Bourne MMA route before the lunch stop at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School.
This ride begins at 5:30 a.m. and depending on pace and rest times, can last from 4 hours to 14 hours. Most riders arrive at MMA between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m.
