Adventurous multi-day trekking in the Lake Tekapo, Mackenzie High Country
Private land: Access to the Cass Valley, O'Leary's Hut and Falcon's Nest is by permission from Glenmore Station:
O'Leary's and Falcon's Nest Huts are popular destinations in the winter for ski-touring and split-boarding. They are equally rewarding in the summer and are a great option for multi-day hut-to-hut hiking in the Lake Tekapo region.
O'Leary's Hut has the added bonus of a hot tub (added in 2024). It's the perfect spot to ease tired muscles and enjoy some star-gazing. The Mackenzie region is renown for its star-gazing and is part of the International Dark Sky Reserve. With no other light sources for many miles, these will be some of the clearest skies you’ll ever experience!
Starting from O'Leary's Hut, the route to Falcon's Nest hikes up alpine meadows and through a bouldery basin to cross a high pass into Tin Hut Stream, about 2 hours trek from the hut. Take a side trip to a nearby summit to enjoy your packed lunch with a stunning vista over the Cass Valley and its surrounding peaks, waterfalls, moraine walls and glaciers. Great views of the Southern Alps from the upper ridges. Descend boulder fields, alpine meadows and steep scree slopes to Tin Hut Stream, then a short hike up the stream to Falcon's Nest at 1450m. Enjoy cooling your feet in the stream by the hut on a hot day while taking in your beautiful alpine surroundings!
4-6 hours trekking across rough alpine terrain with steep scree slopes. It may be necessary to cross snow fields near the pass. Your friendly and professional IFMGA / NZMGA alpine trekking guides will ensure your safety and teach you the skills required for a safe crossing.
Guided hike: enjoy the full experience (including a 4WD adventure) with the knowledge and skills of our IFMGA / NZMGA qualified alpine trekking guides on our Lake Tekapo Hut to Hut Trek
