Dunderberg Mountain -> Bald Mountain -> The Timp Loop (Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail, Timp Torne Trail)

A historic loop connecting some of Bear Mountain's finest views.
This loop showcases the historic Dunderberg Spiral Railway in addition to multiple picturesque peaks: Dunderberg Mountain, Bald Mountain, and The Timp. For reasons still unknown to this day, the railroad was abandoned long ago, but it now provides an excellent hiking opportunity with countless views along the way.
Begin this hike at the Timp Torne Trailhead along US-9W. A gravel pull-off can accommodate quite a few vehicles. Make your way up the trail to the first intersection. Though this loop can be completed in either direction, counter-clockwise is the preferred choice. Keep right and continue along the Ramapo Dunderberg Trail. As the trail turns to the northwest, the point gives way to some phenomenal views of the Hudson River Valley from above Jones Point.
Continuing along the loop, the trail begins to showcase the extensive remnants of the Dunderberg Spiral Railway. The trail crosses the abandoned railroad at several points and offers opportunities to explore the former project. Make your way to the intersection with the Cornell Mine Trail and keep left to summit the most prominent peak on the hike, Bald Mountain. Enjoy the panoramic views, including those of the distant Bear Mountain Bridge and Anthony's Nose.
After a couple of trail junctions, the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail intersects the Timp Torne Trail. For some killer views, continue straight to a rocky, partially exposed overlook. Retrace your steps to continue the loop.
To return, follow the Timp Torne Trail back. Along the way, you will pass an intersection with the 1777 Trail before reaching another tunnel. The final intersection leads back to the trailhead—the same way you began.
