Rock gardens and rock slabs interspersed with sandy stretches make for an ever-changing ride.

Sovereign is one of the classic Moab routes that has been re-routed in recent years with more attractive and more enjoyable singletrack. Unlike most Moab trails, however, the Sovereign singletrack is shared with motorcycles, meaning that this trail shows much more wear and tear than most Moab trails.

First, the good. Sovereign offers entertaining rocky singletrack riding without some of the steep, extended climbs found in other trail systems. Chunky rock gardens and flowy slabs of slickrock make for an ever-changing ride experience, keeping the ride feeling fresh.

Now, the bad. Due to the excessive motorcycle traffic, the sections of singletrack between the rocks are extremely rutted in places. In others, the throttle twisting has reduced the trail to deep sand pits.

The silver lining: this would be the perfect trail for a full suspension fat bike. The fat tires would provide great float through the deep sand and the suspension would provide forgiveness in the technical rock gardens. That said, this trail is still achievable on a normal mountain bike, you may just be forced to hike through some of the sandy sections. Written by Greg Heil
