Big Hourglass is a permanently closed area on the skier's left side of lower Third Bowl sometimes used as freeride competition venue.
You'll see Big Hourglass as you traverse back from Lower Third Bowl toward Phoenix Bowl along the Third Bowl / Phoenix Exit to East River Express. You pass above Big Hourglass in Low Exit and along Magic Carpet. It is a permanently closed area that is rarely used as a freeride venue, only on good snow years, for the Crested Butte Extremes event. It is full of pillows and mandatory-air exits with close out cliffs in the 25-50 foot range. The smallest choke through Big Hourglass is only a few feet but surrounded by exposure.
