Backcountry Skiing Route

Great ski terrain straight above the sea in a remote corner of Lofoten

Himmeltinden and its surrounding sub peaks stand alone on the western side of the Lofoten archipelago, and this is one of the main the reasons it can be such a great option for a ski tour. Providing close to 1000 meters vertical of ski terrain and with uninterrupted views out to sea, the secluded Himmeltiden epitomizes what is best about Lofoten skiing. Most of the ski terrain is west facing and is therefore very exposed to westerly wind. This means the ski quality here can be very on or off, but for those times where there has been a strong easterly wind and west facing slopes are best, it is a superb option! The skiing is never very demanding, but the terrain is open and playful and will appeal most backcountry skiers looking for a good day out somewhere off the beaten path.

From the parking at Utakleiv, head eastward following the small stream. It can be tricky to cross, but it is usually possible to find a suitable point to cross and head up trending leftward into Ovredalen. After crossing the stream, it is necessary to navigate a short steep section before accessing more mellow terrain. From here, pick the easiest skin line up towards the summit of Himmeltinden. The final slopes can be too steep and tricky to skin, so you may have to switch to bootpacking or even use crampons. It is possible to take many small variations in line choice for the descent but be sure to relocate the best spot to cross back over the stream!
