Broken Boyfriend Loop

Mountain Biking Trail

Extreme
5.55 mi
697 ft
This logical close-to-town loop is still a technical mountain biking challenge.

The longtime Buena Vista classic, Broken Boyfriend, was extended in 2019 with a sublime new section of singletrack. Both sections of Broken Boyfriend trail, when combined with Camp Elevation and some of the OG Whipple Trails, create a logical from-town loop that can easily be pedaled in a lunch hour.

Even though this ride is close to town and relatively short, don't make the mistake of thinking it's easy. Instead, this quick loop is a black-diamond difficulty mountain bike ride, providing an entertaining challenge for advanced mountain bikers.

The technical challenge arises from the wide array of rock obstacles present on this ride. The climb up Camp Elevation is filled with rock ledges, rock gardens, and a few slabs. Once on Broken Boyfriend, the tech continues with some significant rock slab rolls.

Broken Boyfriend South mostly descends through its array of tech features, making for a pleasurable ride. Unfortunately, if you ride the loop as mapped, you'll have to ascend the most technical features found on Broken Boyfriend North. These features include challenging rock gardens and substantial ledges. While all of the features *can* be climbed, going uphill on these rock features is a tricky challenge.

If you prefer to descend both sections of Broken Boyfriend, you can conceivably create a figure-8 route by utilizing the Midland railroad grade. Otherwise, just grunt up the short, steep climbs and complete the ride as mapped. Written by Greg Heil
