Trail Running Route

A 93-mile trail that circumnavigates Mount Rainier, one of North America's most iconic peaks.

The Wonderland Trail circumnavigates glacier-covered 14,410-foot Mount Rainier—the tallest mountain in the state of Washington. This epic journey covers 93 miles of trail and climbs (and descends) over 23,800 feet of elevation. Thru-running the entire trail is a formidable challenge! If you've successfully completed the entire Wonderland Trail, that's a little boast worth dropping into casual conversation at your local bar.

"The trail is rarely flat as it climbs and descends the various flanks of Rainier, but the constant effort is rewarded by a continual change of scenery, from deep forested valleys to sub-alpine meadows," [writes]( FATMAP Editor Charlie Boscoe. Over the course of this epic journey, in addition to stunning meadows and forests, you'll enjoy colorful wildflowers, glacier views, rushing mountain streams, waterfalls, views of epic mountain summits, and more.

You can break up this journey in a variety of different ways. Several companies offer supported circumnavigations of Rainier on the Wonderland Trail. If you choose to fastpack self-supported, "there are 18 campsites on the trail, roughly 3 to 7 miles apart, and these are unfailingly stunning," according to Boscoe. "Every camp has cleared tent sites, a pit or composting toilet, bear pole for hanging food, and a nearby water source. A backcountry permit, including reservations for designated camping areas, is required to [camp along] the Wonderland Trail," he continues. Permits can be acquired from the [NPS](

Finally, if you're a true badass, consider running the entire trail in one go. At the time of this writing, the current supported FKT was set by Ryan Ghelfi in 2018 at 18h 27m 42s. The fastest unsupported FKT was set by John Maxwell earlier this year (2019) at 22h 23m 3s. The fastest female supported time of 22h 4m 47s is held by Jenn Shelton and was set in 2015. And finally, the fastest unsupported female FKT was set by Rachel Entrekin earlier in 2019 at 1d 1h 7m. ([Source](
