Near Point

Hiking Trail

A local go-to for a steep workout with rewarding views.

Near Point is a ultimately a bump on the greater front of the Chugach, but makes a worthy summit for those uninitiated to the steep trails of this range. Near Point is tall enough to make a strenuous workout and to reward with big views over Anchorage, but short enough that locals often tag it before or after work.

Starting from Prospect Heights trailhead (or an alternate start at Basher Drive), the trail takes some ups and downs through forest and clearings. It soon finds good views over the city and the inlet, but the vantage only gets better going up. After passing an obvious 4-way junction where the trail to Wolverine Peak turns off, the trail to Near Point begins to steepen.

Soon you’ll leave the forest behind, and the path weaves through shrubby alders as it aims up the ridgeline. The terrain becomes quite steep and a bit loose in places, but with no real fall hazards. Keep pushing upward and soon enough you’ll reach the top. From there you’ll enjoy a 360-degree vista dominated by Wolverine Peak on one side, and a birds-eye view of Anchorage on the other. You’ll likely want to idle on the comfortable summit to take it all in. Written by Jesse Weber
