Mieders to Maria Waldrast
Hiking Trail

An ideal trip for families to a truly unique mountain restaurant.
Hikes don't get much more family friendly than this - the paths throughout are wide and easy, there's a mountain hut at each end of the hike and in the middle, and there isn't too much ascent to be done. If you want to get your kids into hiking, this is a good place to start.
Ride the Serlesbahn lift up from Mieders village and dedicate some time to playing on the amazing kids playground there. There's the usual array of swings and slides, and a fantastic system of water ways where the kids can block and open a series of small dams. There's also an excellent mountain hut at the top of the lift.
When you do get hiking, follow a good jeep track south into the forests and stay on it as it descends beneath the mighty north face of Serles. The jeep track winds its way down and then climbs up to a vague col before dropping down to the Maria Waldrast - a monastery turned mountain restaurant where you can find epic food and monks serving your meal!
Have an explore around the monastery - it really is fascinating and atmospheric - before retracing your steps over the vague col and then turn right and begin climbing up another jeep track. Climb up through the trees and then zig zag down to pass the Ochsenhütte, (where you can grab another drink) before completing the descent down to the cable car station.
If you want a little more fun, there's a summer luge at Mieders that brings out the big kid in everyone! Either ride the luge or the cable car back down to Mieders village. Written by Charlie Boscoe
