A lovely stroll to one of Kelowna's best known landmarks
If huge views and peaceful forests are your thing, this hike is for you! It's a pretty short trip and can be made even shorter if you choose.
Park up at the (often busy) Knox Mountain parking lot and begin your trip by hiking up Poplar Point Drive as it winds alongside Lake Okanagan and then begins to climb up away from the lake. The houses on Poplar Point Drive are some of the most expensive in the Okanagan valley so enjoy looking at them, and try not to be too jealous of the people who get to wake up every day with that view!
When Poplar Point Drive ends, get onto a wide, smooth track which leads gradually down to Paul's Tomb - a fabulous viewpoint with several picnic benches from where to enjoy the panorama. (If you want to make this hike even shorter, then parking just uphill from where the paved road becomes a track and simply going to Paul's Tomb and back is a good option, and provides less than 3km of hiking, all of it incredibly scenic.)
Retrace your steps back to where the track left Poplar Point Drive, but instead of descending, make the steep-ish climb up and around Knox Mountain's blunt south-west shoulder to reach the lower lookout; a well known viewpoint across Kelowna and the central part of Okanagan Lake.
Finish your trip by zig zagging down the lower part of the popular Apex Trail, and then head for a drink in one of north Kelowna's many breweries and cafes! Written by Charlie Boscoe
