A good day of hiking with an incredible viewpoint!
Starting Location: Rifugio Boe
Ending Location: Rifugio Viel dal Pan
Optional Routes: (A) Piz Boe summit, (B) Sass Pordoi cable car, (C) To avoid climb to beautiful viewpoint
Regional Map: Tabacco Map 07
Path Numbers: 627, 601
Places to eat/drink on route: Rifugio Pordoi, Passo Pordoi and Rifugio Fredarola
This section of the AV2 leaves behind the Sella Group Massif and enters the Marmolada Group mountain range. This section does give you the opportunity to summit Piz Boe today if you did not yesterday. Leave Rifugio Boe on path 627 heading for Rifugio Pordoi.
**Optional Route (A) – Follow path 638 from Rifugio Boe to ascend an easy climb (with some basic aided sections) to summit on Piz Boe. Continue on path 638 to descend the south face of Piz Boe towards Rifugio Pordoi.
After Rifugio Pordoi the path becomes a very steep scree slope that can hit hard on the knees. If you did Cesare Piazetta via ferrata yesterday, then you will be no stranger to this path.
**Optional Route (B) – To avoid the knee buster, take path 627A for 20 minutes to reach Sass Pordoi cable car and travel down to Passo Pordoi.
Once down at Passo Pordoi enjoy a well-earned refreshment at one of the cafés or restaurants. After, take path 601 aiming for Rifugio Fredarola. They serve great pizza’s here and the place has an excellent vibe with big deck chairs allowing for an excellent mid afternoon nap.
Shortly after, stay left following the GPX file on a no-numbered path that follows the ridge leading east to an incredible viewpoint. The climb to the summit of the ridge is not difficult and will not take you long to complete. It is definitely worth it as it provides 360-degree views of lakes and the infamous Marmolada.
**Optional Route (C) – Stay right after Rifugio Fredarola on path 601 to avoid the climb to the viewpoint. You’re missing out.
Meander your way down to Rifugio Viel dal Pan and enjoy a night in one of the best rifugio’s on the trip!
