Day 3: A high summit, returning to the same hut. The Gross Wannenhorn, 3906m.
This is one of the most enjoyable ski ascents in the Oberland, which in good conditions is possible on skins all the way.
Descend from the hut, skiing down the easy glacier until you are right beneath the peak at about 2800m. From here there it is a long skin all the way to the summit at 3906m. The exact best line of ascent varies year to year. In lean conditions or after a lot of wind the shoulder high up may require the use of ski crampons or possibly a short section of carrying as it is just over 30 degrees. Admire the great views, particularly of the Aletschhorn to the W. Descent is via the route of ascent. Pick your line according to the best aspects for the snow, followed by a short skin back up to the same hut. Written by Jon Morgan
