Stubai Ski Tour: Amberger Hut to Franz Senn Hut

Backcountry Skiing Route

Details
7.74 mi
3,320 ft
A long glacial skin to a short roped climb leading to one of two cols, before a long descent to the Franz Senn Hut.

This is the key stage of the route as we are crossing from one valley system to another, over one of two cols. The exact choice of col will be decided with local information from the Amberger Hut, as to which is in best condition. If both are good the Schwarzenbergjoch is slightly less skinning, the Wildgratscharte is a little more skinning and slightly better angle for skiing at the top. From the hut, again reverse your descent route of the day before, heading S. If it is a lean year you may wish to use the bridge just below the hut to cross the river. In a better season the river will be banked out and covered with snow, so will not be necessary to use the bridge. Follow the valley S until you can head left and slightly more steeply up the obvious valley to the E, which gently leads you upwards and onto the Schwarzenbergferner glacier. There are two possible cols above, the one marked here is the slightly more interesting Wildgratscharte, which has slightly steeper terrain towards the top. The far side of the col has an initial steepish pitch, facing E, usually on powder, followed by slightly less steep, big, open slopes that descend NE, then N down the valley below, to arrive at the Franz Senn hut at 2147m. Another fab day descending N facing slopes! Written by Jon Morgan
