Description:

From San Miguel our route takes us through timeless wooded countryside as we make our way downwards to Puerto San Miguel. The views are breathtaking and in spring the fields are ablaze with the vivid colours of wildflowers. At San Miguel our path takes us to the popular sandy beach where there is the opportunity to relax, perhaps take a dip in the clear blue water and enjoy a drink or a meal in one of the beachside restaurants. Later we begin to climb up the quiet road towards Benirras and soon have the chance to visit the Cave of Can Marça. Continuing up, we soon reach the level at which we begin to wend our way back towards San Miguel. Now we pass through beautiful Ibiza countryside with lovely views and the prominent fortified church of San Miguel up ahead. All too soon we reach our outward route and have only to retrace our footsteps to return to our start point. Allow plenty of time for this walk.

Access info:

San Miguel is 16.5 kilometres north of Eivessa (the capital of Ibiza) on the PM 804. Car or scooter hire is readily available in larger towns. There is a bus service from Eivessa and San Antonio in both summer and the off-season, but not on Sundays; details on www.ibizabus.com. Taxis are readily available but are very expensive. Roadside parking is not a problem in San Miguel and the walk begins on the main street leading towards the hilltop church and the road down to Puerto San Miguel.

Additional info:

The best walking period in Ibiza is probably late September to late May; maybe even June for this walk as there is plenty of shade in the pine-woods. It is not a difficult walk and the surfaces are dirt roads or quiet tarmac lanes, so good walking-shoes would be sufficient. Take plenty of fluid. The views are amazing and birdlife abounds. Cameras and binoculars should be taken. Remember to take your swimming gear if planning a dip at the beach. This is a walk for which you should set aside an entire day.

The Cave of Can Marça is open all year and a guided tour is well worth the time, if you have it. In the summer the opening hours are 10.30 to 20.00 and in the winter, 11.00 to 17.30. Prices: adults €10, children €6, concessions (winter only) €7. Contact: 971334776 (English spoken). There is a shop and a cafe on site.

San Miguel Church is a must to visit. It is an excellent example of the fortified churches on the island, which provided shelter to the local people in the face of many invasions by pirates seeking to seize food and water as well as take locals into captivity as slaves. The main church dates back to the 16th Century and the two chapels were added in the 17th Century.

On most Thursday evenings during the season there are folk-dancing shows in the church courtyard and a local crafts market in the square at the foot of the church hill.

Above the bay of Puerto San Miguel sits the Torre de Balansat (also known as Torre des Molar). This is one of a network of such towers built around the coasts of Ibiza and Formentera during the 16th and 18th Centuries. They provided a lookout to warn of seaborne invasions as well as a place of refuge for local people.

See if you can spot the ancient well called Pou dén Petit on the main road approaching the beach at Puerto San Miguel. In past times this was an important source of fresh water for locals. Before tourism the little Puerto was mainly a fishing harbour, although some exporting of pine-wood to the Peninsula took place from there.
