Journey along the rugged coastline of San Francisco as you tackle rolling hills and seemingly endless stairs. This route links two of the most picturesque single-track trails in the city – the Lands End and Batteries to Bluffs Trails. On a clear day, epic views are guaranteed. A good place to start is at the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center just above the Sutro Baths. There are public restrooms and drinking fountains at the visitor center and the Lands End Trail starts here. Midway through the Lands End Trail you will encounter a massive staircase that scales a steep hill. See if you can run up the whole way! The trail exits onto El Camino Del Mar in the affluent neighborhood of Sea Cliff. Once you reach the far side of Sea Cliff you will be in the Presidio. Here you can explore the trails that meander through Baker Beach and continue along the coastline to the Golden Gate Bridge. If you are looking for a challenge, dodge the waves along the waterside at Baker Beach until you come across a steep trail on your right that heads straight up the cliff to the trail above. This is the Sand Ladder and is a true test of climbing stamina. More hills and stairs await on the Batteries to Bluffs Trail, which delivers what its name promises - views of the aging, out-of-service, military batteries and the awe-inspiring rocky coast - with the Golden Gate Bridge looming above.
