Horwich Triathlon (Run Route)

Running Route

Moderate
8.43 km

Round 3 of the Epic North West Triathlon Series for 2016 is the hilly Horwich Triathlon, organised in conjunction with Bolton Tri Club. Taking place from Horwich Leisure Centre, the event will take you up and over some of Bolton’s best hills. If you have a love of long, fast roads, challenging climbs and tough trails, Horwich Triathlon is the event for you. Horwich Triathlon is one of the North West’s longest established races in the triathlon calendar and its tough course will put even the best to the test.

The 8.6k run is roughly an ‘out and back’ run that follows the bike route up the road for a few minutes, before you turn left and head towards Rivington Country Park. The route climbs upwards right from the beginning, it is a little bit on the steep side and continues upwards for quite some time until you eventually summit at Rivington Pike. Only then can you drop down the other side of the pike, turn round and retrace your steps all the way back down to the finish line. The route follows tarmac roads and bridle paths all the way to the base of Rivington Pike when the route leaves the cobbled road and you test your leg strength up the grassy slopes of the Pike. The Pike can get a little muddy if we have had our typical British Spring of rain, rain and more rain so trail shoes can be a good choice. Not only that, but as the Pike is very exposed to the infamous British weather so you may need a trusty windproof/waterproof jacket if the forecast is poor!
