Dovers Dirty Thirty's Challenge.

Taking on 31 of Dovers most difficult climbs 50 mile route topping out at 7,682ft in climbing! That's 20.2 miles of going up hill at an average gradient of 8% more than the Col du Tourmalet and Alpe d'Huez put together but with leg busting 20 – 30% sections thrown in for good measure!
Starting and finishing at the Kittywake pub, recommend driving to the start as you won't have the legs to ride home after finishing this beauty.  Finish the ride and toast with a beer outside the pub revelling in the glory of completing Dovers Hardest - if not Kents - Hardest cycling challenge!

The Climbs

#1 Green Lane Climb. 8% Avg Grade. 0.5 mile.  Little sharp climb off the main road on to nice false flat, and so through the gate at the bottom where the climb really starts, really steep sections up to 17%.

#2 Coldred Hell. 9% Avg Grade. 0.4 mile. So on to this little beauty... remains at 9% relentless to the top. Steepest section of 13% in the middle but no break just keep going straight up to the top.

#3 Lydden Hill Sign to Sign. 5% Avg Grade. 0.9 mile.  Long steady climb out of Lydden, used by local cycle clubs for Hill Climb TT's. Just look forward to the nice long decent to rest your legs.

#4 Swanton Lane. 6% Avg Grade. 0.5 mile. Short climb off Lydden Hill, long flat to right hand bend then up you go to 16%! Get to the first right, turn around and fly back down the hill!

#5 Warren Lane to Belsey Lane. 3.1% Avg Grade. 3.1 miles. Ignore the ride up the main drag through Lydden to get to the start of this climb because it doesn't start till you turn right off the main road.  The road flicks up but its only a bump then a long rise until the road bends to the left where a nasty section of 0.6  a mile hits you up to 13%.

#6 Neck Wood Blast Wolverton Hill. 10% Avg Grade. 0.5 miles.  As it suggests 10% for half a mile is not easy and you'll be feeling your veins in your neck pumping as you go up through neck woods and it's 20 plus % sections on this baby.

#7 Warren Lane – Off slip Lane. 14.8% Avg Grade. 0.2 mile. OMG! Here we go! You want to hope that the road is dry and or you don't lean back to far because you'll be straight off. Not a very long climb but guaranteed leg and lung buster – according to Strava's calculations sections of 40%+!!!

#8 Slip Lane.  5% Avg Grade. 1.2 miles.  This one comes as a nice break even though there is a small section of 18%  but that’s nothing after the heroics of the last two climbs ;-)

#9  Hogbrook Hill Climb. 8% Avg Grade. 0.7 miles. Well your in luck there are no hogs or Brooks on this climb however there are a couple of out the saddle sections on this. Look forward to a nice spin your legs finish – if you can still feel them!

#10 Meggett Lane. 9% Avg Grade. 0.5 miles.  Say hello to Meggett Lane! It's short, steep and leg sapping. Don't let the Ave of 9% fool you as it twists and turns up getting steeper and steeper and really bites topping out in the last 200 yards at 20%

#11 Anaerobic Threshold Test. 6% Avg Grade. 0.2 miles. Whiz down Gravel lane avoid the 'gravel' in the pit of the hill...  Try and keep it in the big ring as the road kicks up but you'll have to knock it down once you see the last very steep 50yards.

#12 Hougham Lane climb. 13% Avg Grade. 0.1 miles. Very short and sweet rise but enough to get the blood pumping.

#13 Up to Church Hougham. 10% Avg Grade. 0.3 miles. So just as you legs have recovered your meet with this cheeky little number.  Some 20%+ sections will be enough to ensure you'll be out of the saddle and you legs will be like jelly at the top.

#14 Lowslip Hill Hougham climb. 3% Avg Grade. 1.3 miles. Nice long meandering climb until you reach Lowslip Hill and you'll be met with Gradients of up to 19% for 100 yards, sure to put your lungs in your throat.

#15 Stonyway lane. 6.4% Avg Grade. 0.6 miles.  This road's in desperate need of re-tarmacking but this just adds to the challenge as you avoid the pot holes, mud and gravel.  Keep on spinning to the top and you'll be rewarded with the pleasant smell of horse poo as suck in the Oxygen to take the pain away.

#16 Channel Tunnel old access road. 8% Avg Grade. 0.5 miles. Once you've negotiated the gate at the bottom hop back on your bike for this nice steady climb out of Dover and enjoy the view from the top. Oh sorry, forgot to mention the 20% steep part... :-D

#17 Shakespear Road 'THE WALL'. 13% Avg Grade. 150 yards. This will be the steepest hill you have ever been up on a bike Guaranteed.  There's nothing short and sweet about this B.....D!  The KOM is 32 seconds, you either need to get off and push or go from side to side to crest this beast.

#19 Union Street Climb.  8% Avg Grade. 0.7 miles. Now its time to sweat.  An orgasmic little rise at 17% for 50 yards, on to flat break, turning left and straight on up this freshly tarmacked relentless climb as it swings left then right with a nice easy last 50 yards.

#20 Western Heights Climb. 9% Avg Grade. 0.4 miles.  Not let up on this little baby. Wind you way up this twisty turning hill with some 26% gradients on the bends, new legs and lungs needed at the end of this.

#21 Castle Hill Junction to Junction 10% Avg Grade. 0.5  miles. This cheeky little bugger is sure to give the pain you crave as it bends and turns with a short break half way up but it don't last long till your burning the legs once again to the top.

#22 Connaught Road. 6% Avg Grade. 0.6  miles. There's a reason why they built the castle at the top of this hill and thats because by the time you get to the top you've no fight left in you and there's no difference riding a bike up I can assure you!

#23 Old Charlton Road. 10% Avg Grade. 0.7 miles.  Don't get cocky at the bottom of this climb as starts with a nice gentle rise up past the school and the graveyard as the graveyard is where you'll end up because the last 500 yards are a killer.

#24 Roman Road 'Suitable for road bikes'. 7% Avg Grade. 0.7 miles. Ha! what a joke 'suitable for road bikes'. You'll need to use your head going up this pot holed mother, just a shame you brain will be starved of oxygen as it all will be going to your screaming legs!

#25 Melbourne Hill. 8% Avg Grade. 1.0 mile. Just as you legs are starting to recover we go up one of longest climbs of the day, with an 8% average seems OK but there is a down hill and a flat section so guess what that means? Yes more hellish gradients to smash your already jellied legs.

#26 Short Green Lane.  8% Avg Grade. 0.4 miles. Form an orderly que as as you go through the gate at the bottom and sit back and relax as you spin up the short rise until you turn left when it ramps up to bust them thighs.

#27 'Gate Probably locked' Old Park Hill. 8% Avg Grade. 0.7 miles. This lovely long leg sapper will have you breathing fire as when you get to the top you'll find the short cut you just used to get to Whitfield is knackered as the local residents have locked the bloody gate, a real pleasure as I'm sure you'll agree.

#28 Crabble lane to the top. 8% Avg Grade. 0.6 miles. This road has seen better days towards the top but that will be the least of your worries as it kicks up to some 18% out of the saddle sections.

#29 Barwick/Abbey Road Climb. 6% Avg Grade. 0.9 miles. The end is nigh! That is exactly how you'll feel getting the top of this beast, good job it finishes by a graveyard because that's where you'll be feeling like you belong!

#30 The Dirty 30 – Minis lane. 9% Avg Grade. 0.6 miles. So you've made it to 30 and you should be feeling great but that will soon disperse as you climb, this gets steadily steeper and steeper up to 25% until you think yo can't go any further, and then a little right hand bend and it's all over except for a slight rise until you get to the first right turn and you can turn around a zip to the bottom.

#31 Whitfield Hill. 6% Avg Grade. 0.7 miles.  Well here it is the last climb, you'll be greeted with a little rise off the roundabout then a nice long false flat leading you to the 10% last climb of the day ;-).
