The most popular and longest running path in the metro Denver area is easily the High Line Canal Trail. The 66-mile long canal that runs along this National Landmark Trail was constructed in 1883 to bring irrigation water to farmers from above Waterton Canyon. The canal is still operational today but now it is better known for its multi-use recreational path. Most of the wide, flat High Line Canal Trail is a well-maintained dirt surface, shaded by cottonwood trees. The High Line Canal starts at Chatfield State Park, southwest of Denver, and snakes in a northeasterly direction through three counties. Along the way you will see everything from mountain vistas and gorgeous residential areas to junkyards and industrial buildings. Our out and back route stays within the upscale neighborhoods of Cherry Hills Village, starting from Three Pond Park. Here you will pass nature preserves, ponds, country clubs, and jaw-dropping mansions. Be careful at road crossings and bring water with you, as there are no facilities along the trail.
