The closest ski tour to Innbsruck!
The Birgitzköpfl is located in the Stubaier Alps, close to the Axamer Lizum skiing area. This is probably the easiest ski tour you could find in the Innsbruck surroundings and - given the short distance from town - on weekdays is often the destination of many skiers who want to move their legs after a full day in the office and enjoy dinner at the hut before then skiing down the mellow and flat slopes with the help of their headlamps.
This tour is definitely well suited to beginners who would like to get used to the backcountry and the feeling of touring skis without placing themselves in an exposed environment! It’s also often a good backup plan on cloudy days and on days where the avalanche danger is too high: just enjoy an easy spin to the hut, a warm typical Tirolian dish and ski back to the car. Even if this tour will mostly take you to rather flat slopes it is nevertheless absolutely recommendable in terms of scenery, especially in the upper part where the forest opens up and delivers a breathtaking view of Innsbruck from above.
The starting point of the tour is right at the parking lot of Birgitzer Alm, located on a right turn just a couple kilometres before Axamer Lizum’s parking lot. The tour first goes on a summer hiking path through a rather dense forest until crossing a sledging slope: from here on the route will follow an old ski slope - you cannot get lost! Once at Birgitzer Alm you can either choose to call it a day and enjoy some food, or keep pushing your legs for a few hundred verticals more to Birgitzköpfl cross.
When it comes to descending - just follow exactly the same slope you climbed before entering the forest in the lower part which will bring you back to the parking lot.
This tour is also well served by public transport, as a bus stop is located exactly at the starting point. The L1 ski bus leaves from Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof and brings you straight here without any changes. Written by Francesco Drago
