Top 8 backcountry skiing routes in Saas Fee
1
Allalinhorn, 4027m
This is an ideal first day to warm up for the week. As 4000m peaks go it is relatively little effort and barely technical when in good condition. It can be a steady day out and back by the same route with amazing views of a large number of other 4000m peaks....
2
Swiss 4000ers: Fluchthorn, 3795m
After 3 days of consecutive 4000ers, assuming you are following our week long 4000m peak itinerary, this is a slightly shorter day to recharge the batteries before a big final day....
3
Swiss 4000ers: Wiessmies, 4017m alternative route from the S
This is one of the best classic 4000m peak traverses in the Alps and begins from the (unguarded in winter) Almageller hut which you approach the day before. It is never too difficult, though involves some easy scrambling....
4
Swiss 4000ers: Strahlhorn, 4190m.
A fitting climax of the week to a magnificent viewpoint. From the hut descend SW beneath the rocky buttress of the Hinter Allalin ridge to get onto the Hohlaub Glacier. Go SSW across the Hohlaub Glacier passing under point 3150m to gain the Allalin Glacier....
5
Schönbiel Hut to Saas Almagell via Strahlhorn
Traditionally the Haute Route ends in Zermatt, but a very logical continuation is onwards to the Saas Valley. Many will choose to do this route with lift assistance, starting from Fluealp, but if you can hack skinning up pistes, you can get the pure tick....
6
Saas Almagell to Simplon Hospice
This is a tough day to try and link on skis without walking- we didn’t manage it! You are heading roughly NE, but the huge bulks of the Weissmies, the Lagginhorn and the Fletschhorn are directly on your line of travel....
7
Swiss 4000ers: Weissmies 4017m
The Weissmies is one the best and most famous of all the obvious 4000m peaks that can be easily climbed on skis. Not only do you get staggering views of the numerous other 4000m peaks nearby, but also to the E and S you look down onto the Italian plains, often above a cloud inversion below....
8
Alphubel, 4206m via East Flank
With its characteristic flat top, Alphubel, 4206m, is easily recognisable from a distance. It is slightly higher than your previous 2 summits, if you are following our Allalinhorn, Weissmies itinerary, but you should be acclimatising by now....
