The Best Hiking Trails in Tirol

Hikes don't get much more family friendly than this - the paths throughout are wide and easy, there's a mountain hut at each end of the hike and in the middle, and there isn't too much ascent to be done....

This easy hike starts at the parking lot next to the Neustift i. Stubaital Abzw. Nürnberger Hütte bus stop. Follow the trail south into the narrow Längental valley in direction of the Nürnberger hut....

For a relaxed arrival at the starting point, take the train to “Matrei am Brenner” and change there for the bus to “Pfons”. Alternatively, cars can be parked at several places in the village of Pfons....

Two trails lead their way up to the Juifenaualm hut, both starting at the parking lot at Juifenau in the Lüsens valley. You can decide between a gravel road, which gently wiggles its way up to the hut, and a summer path with a more intense nature experience....

You can easily reach this hike from the city centre by bike or the bus line A Sadrach/Allerheiligenhöfe to the stop Sadrach. Following the Planötzenhofstraße you will reach the beginning of the trail at the parking next to the Planötzenhof....

At the top of Kitzbühel’s famous Hahnenkamm mountain there is a very pleasant and well-maintained footpath taking you in a loop around a few high alpine highlights. You will pass the site of the Streif, the Alpine Ski World Cup downhill race, as well as many beautiful flowering meadows, cows, playgrounds, kids climbing walls, restaurants, and the awe-inspiring Kitzpanorama....

The Schwarzsee is tranquil, huge, and beautiful. On a sunny summer's day when you would prefer to swim rather than hike in the surrounding mountains, this short walk around Schwarzsee is a wonderful option....

Ride the Hornbahn 1 and 2 from Kitzbühel. Beginning at the Alpenhaus, climb gently up to the Hörnkopfl lake. Walk around the lake in an anti-clockwise direction and then begin to climb up to the top of the Hörnkopfl (1773m)....

Hikes don't come much easier than this - if you want to get your kids into mountain sports then this is the place to do it. The exact line we've shown here isn't actually suitable for buggies in its entirety because it takes you to the Filzenalm, but this section is easy to skip out if you choose to....

Starting at the tennis centre in Seefeld, the day begins with a gentle, almost flat hike through forests and fields. After 20 minutes or so the path climbs up and right up to a holiday village....

The hike starts at the Alpenrose Hotel, just below Kühtai village it-self. Follow the track running parallel to the chair lift, bending round to the right until you reach a left-hand turn on to the hiking trail, signposted ‘Dreiseenhütte’....

The little village of Navis is best known as a ski tourers paradise and is home to some fantastic non-glaciated mountains. It's also the base for this excellent circular hike which takes you between a series of quaint Tirolian mountain huts....

Start by driving up to the Kemater Alm, a spectacular hut beneath the dramatic Kalkogel mountains. The hut is a popular sledging destination in winter and it can also be skied to from the ski area of Axamer Lizum via some fantastic free ride terrain....

The impressive bulk of Habicht can be easily spotted from Innsbruck and the 3277m peak is one of the most dominant in the Stubai range. Being one of the easier 3000m peaks in the area, Habicht is a popular tick for mountaineers in Austria, however it is not without danger with many exposed sections and some of the route is also over glaciated terrain, so it should not be undertaken lightly....

The starting point at the mountain guest house Praxmar can be reached with the Postbus Praxmar from Innsbruck during the summer months (mid-July until mid-September) if you don't want to pay for a parking ticket or want to take some climate action....

The Blaser is located in the Gschnitz valley, one of the Brenner side valleys. You can take the train to Steinach and go on with well-timed bus to Trins Gemeindeamt, instead of going on the mostly very busy road up to the Brenner by car....

The Walder Alm enjoys one of the finest views of any hut in the Inn valley, but this hike is also an excellent option in wet weather because most of it is in the trees not overly exposed to the conditions....

Starting and finishing in Seefeld (which can be easily reached by train from Innsbruck), this is a logistically simple hike right in the heart of the Tirol. It leads you quickly out of town and into lovely forests before then taking you to a summit with one of the best vistas in the region, and that's saying something....

With everything from peaceful forests to a bustling Tirolian town and some huge views, this is a gorgeous trip through the lower hills of the Nordkette range. Start at the Hungerburg cable car station to the north of Innsbruck....
