A fittingly tough start to a tough trip, the first day of the Pennine Way doesn't pull any punches! The route does go over Snake Pass, from where it's a simple (if slightly tedious) stroll down to Glossop, but other than bailing to Glossop there isn't really a logical way of shortening this day....

With big skies above and featureless moorland all around, this day is all about ambience. Nowhere has an atmosphere quite like the moors of Northern England, and on this trail you'll experience them in all their barren glory....

With noisy roads never far away and lots of flat terrain, not many hikers count this as one of the finest days on the Pennine Way. It's not a bad day by any means, just not one of the highlights of the trail....
