The Best Hiking Trails in Yorkshire Dales National Park

After the tough trip from Malham to Horton in Ribblesdale this is a much easier day with much less vertical height gain and fairly straightforward navigation. Much of the hiking is on Roman roads and former packhorse trails so you can get on with enjoying the wide open ambience of the moors without needing to concentrate too much on route finding....

After the features and excitement of yesterday (and possibly an eventful night at the Tan Hill Inn!) this is a much less landmark-laden trip, with mile after mile of heather and some impressively-boggy ground! Be aware that if you don't detour to Bowes then there aren't many options for picking up supplies en route, so make sure you've got enough to keep you going....

This day isn't one of the best on the Pennine Way but it's enjoyable enough, and the trail really improves north of Malham so the prospect of that should be appealing enough to keep you plugging away across the farmland....

Even by the high standards of the Yorkshire Dales, this is a stunning trip through some of England's most celebrated natural landmarks. The day starts with the incredible Malham Cove, home to some of the hardest rock climbs in the world and a scenic wonder even for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground....

Despite not being one of the UK's designated National Trails, the Coast to Coast remains one of the most popular multi-day walks in the United Kingdom. Usually split out over 12 stages, this 309km / 192 mile hike passes through three of the UK's most famous national parks: the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors....

Each hiker will have their own criteria for what makes a great day, but regardless of how you judge these things, this is a classic journey. It might even be - whisper it quietly - the best single day on the entire Pennine Way....

With a stunning and unique industrial landmark followed by a legendary mountain summit, this is a justly popular walk in one of the most scenic parts of northern England. The hike starts in a barren spot next to the Station Inn, a few kilometres north-east of Ingleton....

With no less than 3 major natural landmarks, this is a densely packed journey through some of Yorkshire's best scenery. Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar and Malham Cove are all worth visiting on their own, and combining all 3 makes for a fabulous day....

Doable from either Helwith Bridge or Horton in Ribblesdale, this is a wonderful loop over a famous summit. This route is about half the length of the famous Yorkshire 3 Peaks route, so it's a nice option for those who want to sample the area without committing to the full 3 Peaks....
