The Best Rock Climbing Routes in Tirol

This is about as good as low grade mountain adventures get because it combines several sports, varied mountain scenery and a couple of excellent summits. Start out in the hamlet of Sankt Sigmund im Sellrain and follow the large jeep track south out of the village....

Starting from the remote Karl Schuster bivouac hut and taking you over 2 peaks in the heart of Austria's most remote mountain range, this is a serious but rewarding day which any mountaineer would enjoy....

The Innsbrucker Hütte is the gateway to Habicht, and thus the peak is clearly signposted, advising you quite accurately that the summit takes 3 hours from the hut. The path is clear to begin with but becomes more difficult to follow as the terrain becomes more rocky and grassy, but continue looking out for the red and white paint marks which lead the way....

This is a classic trip through the Stubai's high mountains and begins with a dawn start from the spectacularly situated Müllerhütte. Leave the hut and get back onto the Übeltalferner Glacier....

From Oberissalm follow a well signposted hiking path for around 1hr15minutes to arrive at the Franz-Senn Hutte. From the hut take the path signposted ‘Vordere Sommerwand’, follow it uphill and after 45 minutes you will reach a boulder field....

At the lower end of Kühtai village, the walk-in begins from the Alpenrose hotel. Follow the road which initially runs parallel to the cables of the Dreiseenbahn chair lift, then swings round to the right heading towards the imposing dam wall of the Finstertaler Reservoir....

This is a fantastic day out and would most certainly be one of the best ridge climbs in the area, if it weren't for the rather arduous walk-in! The route is clearly not frequented by climbers, which is wonderful for having a mountain to yourself, but which unfortunately also means that the forest of mountain pines which you have to cross on your way to the start of the route is dense to say the least....

This is a fabulous mid-grade route which any mountain-lover will enjoy. It's a serious proposition and is often underestimated but if you're skilled and experienced enough - and get a bit of luck with conditions - this is about as good Austrian mountaineering gets....

Starting from the Seegrube cable car station head west, taking the traversing path signposted ‘Vorderes Brandjoch 2558 m’. The walk in feels long, but keep traversing, following signs for Vorderes Brandjoch....

This route is shown here as a mountaineering route but in many ways, it's much more than that. The day involves mountain biking, hiking and climbing, all in wonderful scenery. Start out by riding the Ehrwalder Almbahn lift and then bike along the jeep track to the south-east of the lift station....
