Verbier Crest Loop

Trail Running Route

Hard
14.31 mi

A gorgeous loop following the crest of the mountains above Verbier

This loop connects several of the most famous hiking trails in Verbier into a gorgeous circuit along the crest of the mountains, high above the town of Verbier! Along the way, you’ll pass thundering waterfalls, climb mountain peaks, and run along the shores of pristine alpine lakes.

The loop as mapped here heads west from downtown Verbier, making its way out into the countryside and slowly ascending the mountainside. The first ascent runs through trees and alpine meadows, eventually reaching a thundering waterfall! [According to]( Jeff Lamppert, “there is a small viewing point where you can actually stand above the flight of the water as it goes down.”

After passing the waterfall, you’ll begin climbing in earnest as you make your way for the summit of Pierre Avoi. At 2,473 MASL, it is one of the highest points on this route, and the highest summit along the loop. However, you will pass over a col later on with an elevation of about 2,638 MASL.

The climb to Pierre Avoi is steep, and only gets steeper and tricky as you progress. The upper reaches of Pierre Avoi can be challenging, but “various ladders and metal grids have been put in to help you with your ascent,” according to Lamppert. "The rock can be slippy even when dry,” he continues. “Please use all of these” ladders.

After enjoying the view on the summit, continue heading to the north, and then turn east to continue following the ridge. Enjoy the stunning views as you run along this high alpine singletrack! Soon, you’ll reach the top of the Savoleyers lift station, which provides access from the valley below. If you need to bail off the route, this is a convenient spot to do so.

Continuing along the ridge to the east, you’ll soon reach the Crois de Coeur restaurant, which is a great spot to stop for lunch.

From the restaurant, you’ll begin gaining elevation consistently as you work toward Lac des Vaux. Along this climb, you’ll enjoy "stunning views over Verbier and also over towards La Tzoumaz,” [according to]( Kimberly Kircher. "As you reach the final ascent to the lake you have a beautiful running stream to your right,” she continues. As you reach the top of the climb, you’ll first see a small lake, but then you’ll round a corner to run along the shores of the stunning Lac des Vaux!

From the lake, you’ll climb up and over a col below Attelas peak, topping out at the aforementioned 2,638 MASL. And now, it’s all downhill!

Run down a steep set of switchbacks and traverse across the slopes to the top of a gondola station. Continue following a series of switchbacked trails down, down, all the way back to the center of Verbier.

Congratulations, your circumnavigation of the Verbier Crest Loop is now complete! Written by Greg Heil
